How the income tax is worked out

The estimate starts from your income and subtracts the 2026 standard deduction, $16,100 for a single filer. What is left is taxable income. On $75,000 that leaves $58,900.

Federal tax is applied in layers, not as one rate on the whole amount. The first dollars are taxed at 10%, the next band at 12%, and so on up the brackets, so only the income above each cutoff is taxed at the higher rate. Adding the layers gives a federal bill of about $7,670 here. Where a state charges income tax it is added on top; Texas does not, so the state line stays $0 in this example.

Total tax divided by the whole income gives the effective rate, 10.2% on $75,000. That is the share of income that actually goes to income tax, and it sits below the 22% band the top dollars fall in. Change the income, filing status, or state above and every line updates.

Common questions

How much federal income tax will I pay on $75,000?

For a single filer in 2026, about $7,670 after the $16,100 standard deduction. That is an effective rate near 10.2%, not the 22% bracket rate.

What is the difference between the marginal and effective rate?

Your marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar. Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your whole income, which is lower because the first dollars are taxed at lower rates.

Does this include Social Security and Medicare?

No. Those are FICA payroll taxes, a separate 7.65% most workers pay on top of income tax. To see income tax and FICA together in one paycheck, use the take-home pay tool.

Is this my exact tax bill?

Treat it as a close estimate. It uses the standard deduction and the 2026 federal brackets, and adds state income tax where it applies. It does not model itemized deductions, tax credits, or income beyond regular wages, any of which can move the final number. See the full method.
